Room Sealed & External Air Stoves
Understanding the Difference
Room Sealed Stoves
Room sealed stoves are designed so that the fire is completely isolated from the air inside your home. All combustion air is drawn from outside through a sealed system, and the exhaust gases are vented out the same way.
This means the stove does not use any air from the room, making it the perfect choice for modern airtight or MHRV-equipped homes. It ensures safe, balanced air pressure and maximum heating efficiency without affecting your ventilation system.
External Air Stoves
External air (or direct air) stoves are built to connect to an outside air supply, reducing drafts and improving overall efficiency.
However, unlike room sealed models, an external air stove is not completely airtight. Small air leaks through vents or controls can still allow some room air to enter the combustion system.
Because of this, external air stoves are not ideal for homes with MHRV systems, where precise air balance is required. They remain an excellent solution for most traditional or semi-airtight homes, helping to minimise drafts and improve comfort.
In summary:
-
Choose a room sealed stove for new builds, airtight homes, or those with mechanical ventilation.
-
Choose an external air stove for existing or naturally ventilated homes looking to improve efficiency.
Both options provide high-performance heating and reduced energy loss — it’s simply about choosing the right fit for your home.
