Explore Our Wide Range of Hearths
We offer a large selection of hearths suitable for open fires, stoves, electric fires, and all types of installations. But what’s the difference between a hearth for an open fire, a stove, and an electric fire?
1. Hearths for Electric, Gas, and Bio Fires
Slab hearths or one-piece hearths made from granite, slate, or marble are suitable for electric, gas, bio-ethanol, and bio-electric fires. These appliances produce low levels of heat and do not require expansion joints, making slab hearths ideal.
For stoves, slab hearths can only be used when the stove is not in direct contact with the hearth—for example, if the stove is mounted on legs that are at least 100mm high (depending on its kW output). For maximum heat resistance, porcelain hearths are recommended. They tolerate high temperatures and can be used safely with any stove in any configuration.
2. Hearths for Traditional Open Fires
Open fires produce high and uneven heat, which causes the hearth material to expand. To manage this, open fire hearths must include expansion joints. Rather than using one solid piece of stone, the hearth is cut into tiles—usually four small tiles, two larger front pieces, and full-depth side sections. In the case of marble hearths, the four smaller tiles are replaced with granite to better withstand the heat.
3. Inset Stove Hearths
Hearths for inset stoves also need to account for thermal expansion. These are typically split down the centre from front to back, This rule does not apply to Porcelain Hearths. However, if the stove is installed as a hole-in-the-wall unit and not in direct contact with the hearth, a slab hearth can be used without issue.
4. Stove Hearths
We can manufacture stove hearths in a wide range of stones and porcelain, available in tee-shapes, curves, rectangles, and more. Use our price calculator to get an instant online quote. The same expansion rules apply as with inset stove hearths—except when using Porcelain, which does not require expansion joints.
