Planning to get a new stove or fireplace this Winter 2022?

What is involved? Where do I start?

Our showroom in Newmills outside Letterkenny is the best place to come to get things underway. It has real life displays of gas / multi fuel / wood and the very popular electric fires. It’s great to come prepared and in this article, we’ll equip you with the knowledge to come ready for the process. Nowadays to provide a professional service you must adhere to the local building regulations. These regulations, admittedly at times confusing and at times frustrating are in place to keep us safe. The regulations are implemented across the board. Sometimes they don’t always suit our home and we may view it as unnecessary to implement in our unique situation. However they are there to protect everyone and must be adhered to.
Below is information regarding a few different scenarios. A stove install / fireplace install & open fire Install

Terminology
Surround – Decorative frame of your fireplace. See. (cream surround in image 1)
Inset – the piece next to the fire either granite or cast iron.
Hearth – bedded down to protect the flooring.
Inset stove– small enough to sit inside most openings.
Cassette Stove – A wider stove but still built into wall. (image 2)
Freestanding Stove – All 4 legs / pedestal or log store outstanding proud from walls and visible. See. (image 1)

Q1) Are you on an external wall?
This question allows us to place the fire and tells us if you need an external air line. If we cannot connect a fresh air pipe from the back of the stove and lead it outside then we have to install a vent into the room. This is to satisfy Part J of the building regulations is in place for all fuel burning appliances.

Q2) How big is your opening?

This may need further investigation as you cannot always clearly see your opening or the potential opening you may have, as the opening your looking at can be altered depending on your lintel.
This alteration in the size of the opening is carried out by a builder and is usually carried out in order to create image 1 below) recessed freestanding stove or image 2 below) cassette style landscape stove.

Are you keeping your original surround?
If so what material is made from inset stoves are very limited in number when being installed into a wooden surround. With only two stoves available that are suitable for this job. The Arklow 5 and the Hamlet Solution 7
How big is your brace?
This will determine how big your surround can be. If you have a fat wall the biggest deciding factor is the size of the room.

Is the flooring going to change?
If the flooring is remaining precise measurements will be required to ensure that no gaps are left. If the flooring is changing its best but not crucial to have the wood floor boards chosen prior. This will allow us to measure the board and underlay and sit the hearth up high enough to allow the floor fitter to slide the boards under the hearth for a nice flush finish.
Do you require a Boiler or Non Boiler?
If you require a boiler stove a plumber will survey your house to see what is suitable and a plumber will fit the stove.

No Chimney, Can I still have a stove?
Yes in most cases this is no problem and an onsite survey will need to be required to get a quote.
We can install a twin wall insulated flue pipe. Onsite survey will highlight potential issues with draw and if the installation is feasible.
